Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a Ghanaian economist, banker, and politician who served as the seventh Vice President of Ghana from 2017 to 2025 under President Nana Akufo-Addo. Born 7 October 1963 in Tamale, Northern Region, he is the son of the late Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia (former Chairman of the Council of State). He is the 12th of 18 children from his father’s side. Bawumia earned a first-class BSc in Economics from the University of Buckingham, an MSc in Development Economics from Lincoln College, Oxford, and a PhD in Economics from Simon Fraser University in Canada. He lectured at Baylor University and held senior positions including Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. As Vice President he chaired the Economic Management Team and became known as “Mr. Digital” for his advocacy of digitalization, fintech, and technology-driven governance (including the Ghana Card and digital address system). He is married to Samira Bawumia and they have four children. He remains a major figure in Ghanaian politics and economic policy.
